Turmeric has been around forever!

It has been a primary spice used in traditional Indian or Ayurveda medicine  to heal a wide variety of ailments.  It is extracted from the ground up using the roots of the Curcuma Longa plant. Most of Turmeric’s health properties can be attributed to a compound called Curcumin, which is known to have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents. (1)

With such great results across a broad spectrum of conditions, Curcumin is now used experimentally in many different areas, but, is turmeric good for weight loss, fat burning, and metabolism?  Well, in recent studies, researchers have revealed the potential for Curcumin in managing weight in obese individuals or who suffer with metabolic disorders, which is great news for this potent spice. So what is  Metabolism?

To understand the benefits of this research, firstly we need to understand what Metabolism is ?

Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this complex biochemical process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.

Even when you’re at rest, your body needs energy for all its “hidden” functions, such as breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate.

There are several factors determine your individual basal metabolism, including:

Your body size and composition:Body Size and Composition: Larger individuals, especially those with a higher percentage of lean muscle mass, burn more calories at rest.
Your sex:Men usually have less body fat and more muscle than do women of the same age and weight, which means men burn more calories.
Your age:As we age, fat accounts for a higher percentage of overall body weight as our muscle begins to deteriorate. Therefore, natural aging slows down calorie burning.

Besides your basal metabolic rate there are other factors that go into calorie burning and these are your daily physical activity and your body’s ability to digest, absorb and transport nutrients (thermogenesis).
